Curiosity needs context.

A surprising story is a starting point for asking better questions. We explore animal abilities, culture and public lives through documented examples.

Sources sit alongside factual reporting. Rankings and estimates need a stated basis, and a person’s historical experience is not presented as their permanent current condition.

Some stories are original fiction and are labelled within the article. Fictional characters and events are not presented as recovered news reports.

Our conceptual illustrations are original artwork, rather than documentary photographs. Sources are linked in factual articles so readers can examine the supporting context.
